Johannes Meister got his artistic education at the conservatories in Cologne and Vienna. After receiving his diploma in orchestral conducting he attended master classes with Gerd Albrecht and Leonard Bernstein, as well as Helmuth Rilling and Eric Ericson.
His very first engagement led him to Switzerland in 1987, where he got hired as choir conductor at the Lucerne theatre. Afterwards he started regular occupation as a guest conductor of German Radio Choirs.
From 1994 to 1998 Johannes Meister got appointed as choir director at the Vienna State Opera. During this time he worked on a lot of performances with the State Opera choir and was responsible for premieres and concerts under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Carlo Maria Giulini, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti and Marcello Viotti.
Since his return to Switzerland in 1998, he conducts several choirs, including Chor Audite Nova Zug, in concerts with and without orchestras. As lead lecturer he manages a choral conducting training and is very active in the committee of the Swiss Federation Europa Cantat. Johannes Meister is also chief expert and jury member of the Swiss Choral Association.
